The United Arab Emirates, or UAE, is located in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula and consists of seven emirates. Dubai is the largest and most populous city in the United Arab Emirates, the capital of the Emirate of Dubai, and the economic and financial center of the Middle East. Statistics show that most Chinese students who go to study in the UAE choose to go to Dubai, what is their local study experience? The reporter interviewed 3 students studying in Dubai and approached their study abroad life.

A cost-effective place to study

Wang Qishi, a master's student at the University of Wollongong's Dubai campus, is mainly attracted by the high cost performance of studying in Dubai. "The University of Wollongong is a well-known Australian institution of higher learning and it has opened an international campus in Dubai. I had heard about the University of Wollongong for a long time and decided to study in Dubai when I realized that the cost of studying abroad was lower and I could benefit from the teaching resources and degree certificates of the University of Wollongong."

The reporter learned that in order to promote the development of education, the UAE government has invested heavily in the construction of Dubai International Academic City, well-known universities from the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and other countries have opened campuses in the International Academic City, providing undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and other education programs, international students who come to study here can obtain the same academic certificate as the school, and the cost of studying abroad is relatively low. This appeals to international students.

Xu Yujing is an undergraduate studying artificial intelligence at the University of Birmingham's Dubai campus and was awarded a generous scholarship when she applied to the school. Xu Yujing said, "Compared with the University of Birmingham in the UK, the scholarship application of the University of Birmingham Dubai campus is easy and provides a good learning environment. The campus is equipped with laboratories and computer rooms, which are well-equipped, intelligent and professional. I can have access to cutting-edge technologies and understand the latest theories."

"In my opinion, studying in Dubai has a promising future." Mei Jiahua, an undergraduate student at the University of Birmingham Dubai campus, said, "I have made careful consideration when choosing a university abroad, and the UAE is an important partner of the 'Belt and Road' Initiative, and with the deepening of China-Arab cooperation, I think studying in Dubai has greater employment potential." In addition, Dubai is the financial center of the Middle East, where a large number of high-quality financial and technological innovation resources, people from all over the world work and live here, the city is widely used in English, the atmosphere is open and inclusive, I want to experience life here."

An unforgettable campus experience

"The teaching building I am in is like a Rubik's cube, with various scenes that can be switched at will." Wang Qishi said, "The building not only has a library with a large number of books, but also a quiet single study room, a pool table for students to relax, ping-pong tables and so on. In the building, I can meet students from all over the world. They are friendly and talkative, and I have made many new friends through participating in the activities."

Wang Qishi got a lot of inspiration from the class. He said: "I am an education major and my class is filled with students from all over the world and diverse backgrounds, and I am always surprised by the personal experiences they share. For example, one of my classmates used to be a junior high school biology teacher. He combined online games with classroom content to teach through fun. I really appreciate his imaginative teaching method."

Xu Yujing also had a beneficial experience. "In Dubai, students actively participate in the classroom, not passively receive knowledge," she said. In class, the professor gives cases, and students find, discuss and solve problems in small groups. I think expressing opinions can subtly improve our communication and logical thinking skills. Even if we are not accurate, we will be encouraged by our professors, which helps us explore problems boldly and draw conclusions from different perspectives."

'The professors are approachable,' Ms. Meika says. "Usually, when I ask the professor about something I don't understand, I will receive a patient and detailed reply." The professor not only answers my study puzzles, but also gives me advice on getting a professional qualification certificate and choosing a career."

Xu Yujing mentioned that the school's care for students is slightly warm. "Our school has a 'student welfare' department to listen to students' troubles and help students solve difficulties in study and life. On one occasion, I felt stressed before an exam, so I sent an email to the department to complain about my troubles, but I didn't expect a quick response. The department staff communicated with me patiently, helping me to relieve stress and successfully pass the exam period. Not only that, when I first arrived in Dubai, the department introduced us to the nearby student apartments and recommended the local cuisine in order to help international students integrate into the environment more quickly. The help of teachers and classmates was unforgettable."

Spreading Chinese culture in Dubai

"On the fifteenth day of the first month of this year, several Chinese students and I organized a brush writing activity in class." Wang Qishi said, "During the Chinese Spring Festival, we prepared pens, paper and ink stones and red paper to teach foreign students to write the character 'fu' with a brush. They came from the United States, Britain, Iran and other countries, and painted with interest. At the end of the activity, everyone took a group photo together with the written blessing character and was happy. This event made me feel that Chinese culture has a long history, and I am truly happy to spread Chinese culture overseas."

Xu Yujing was impressed by learning Arabic. She said: "I remember when I first learned Arabic, I thought it was very difficult, but now I know it quite well. Arabic is written from right to left, and like Chinese characters there is calligraphy, which in my opinion has beautiful lines. In addition, I used to teach Chinese to local students in my spare time. They were very curious and especially interested in the history of the evolution of Chinese characters. I also learned more about Arab culture through consulting them."

Recently, Xu Yujing visited the World Expo in Dubai with local students, and she remembers the China Pavilion very well. "The appearance of the China Pavilion is like a red lantern, which looks solemn and atmospheric. In the pavilion, I saw China's innovation achievements in space exploration, artificial intelligence, smart life and other fields, and the feeling of pride arose. In addition, I also watched the "Feel China" event held by the China Pavilion into the Dubai Expo. The cheongsam display and Spring Festival couplets delivery brought a strong Chinese flavor to the Dubai Expo. After the event, I took my local classmates to a Chinese restaurant to taste squirrel fish and crayfish. They took photos and pictures, said their stomachs were completely overwhelmed, and invited me to taste the local specialty 'shawarma' (a kind of Middle Eastern barbecue burrito). The aroma of the oily barbecue burrito was delicious." Xu Yujing said.
